Seems that the first week end of sales was a massive success for Apple with sales of over 1,000,000 units. Apple released a press release on Sunday evening with the 1M news. It also pointed out that it took 74 days to sell 1M of the first gen iPhones.
Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray, produced estimates of units sold during the first w/e. 400K in the US and 250K in the UK.

The next release claims 10 million apps downloaded in the same 2 day period. Again not a bad start.
On Monday the O2 order site crashed and smoked. O2 posted a rather lame excuse saying that they received so many iPhone orders the site caught fire. Claiming 13,000 orders a second in their web based apology seems excessive. A little rough shows that rate to be 780,000 / min, or more units that they will sell in a year.
Some sort of fuzzy logic.
But does show some sort of demand..
Friday we can see.
Wow this is big. Axel Springer a major German publishing house is ditching Windows and moving to Mac. In a YouTube video the CEO lists the main reasons.
There are many stories about the limit or lack of regarding the availability of he 3G puppy. All we know is that it goes on sale on Friday at 7:02 (joke). If you punt for the £45 per month contract you can score a free 8Gb unit.
It will be available in 22 countries at launch and another 25 a few weeks later. That’s going to be a lot of units. We could see 10M by year end.
Next Friday you can get your hands on the iPhone 3G. And o2 as expected are releasing it to business customers. With support for MS Exchange server it could give Blackberry a run for its money. O2 has business rates and the iPhone is one of the available handsets with price depending on volumes. Data access can be bolted on for 8.50 pounds a month for Cloud and BT hot spot Wi-Fi connectivity.
O2 are starting to contact their customers and people who have signed up to be kept informed that the 3G iphone lands on the 11th.
The communication says:
As promised, we are writing to you to keep you updated on the next steps to getting iPhone 3G.
iPhone 3G goes on sale on the high street on 11 July 2008.
We will be writing to you again before the 11th with details about how you could place your order. However, we do expect demand for iPhone 3G to be very high so orders will be processed on a first come, first served basis so that we can be fair to all customers. Orders will be limited to one iPhone 3G per customer.
